Easy Food Growing Kit

From: £20.00

We will provide you with a selection of 40 Sheffield hardy, easy to grow food and companion plants that will allow you to transform part of your garden into a delicious and beautiful patch of nature
with food plants and edible flowers.

How does it work?

We will raise your plants in our new Sheffield community nursery in Graves Park and you can come to collect them from us late in April or early May for transplanting to your garden. All plants will come with instructions for care and cookery so you will get the most out of them in your garden and kitchen. In the autumn, we will give you first access to one of our harvest celebration bistros where we can share a first successful community growing season. This is optional and not included with your pack.

Why should you join?

We are building a better food system for Sheffield. That starts by growing food in ways that respect and enhance our natural environment and makes local produce accessible for everyone. By joining you will support building our community nursery, and your garden will become a valuable part of the Sheffield food and natural environment. It is the first step to a city where nature friendly food is grown and enjoyed
everywhere, and by everyone.

FAQ

What does nature friendly mean?

We try to adopt methods for growing food that help rebuild nature. That means using compost that is free of peat and avoiding pesticides by creating a rich and diverse ecological system that encourages pollinators and has a natural resistance to pests.

What plants will be in my pack?

There will be a variety of seedlings to pick from which will include kale, marigolds, nasturtiums, parsley, spring onions, peas, beetroot and calendula. We will be raising hundreds of plants this spring, so there may be more to choose from, subject to how well the season goes!’

Do I have enough space in my garden?

Absolutely! Growing more diverse plants in your garden will attract different wildlife, and is not only beautiful but you can eat it! There is some flexibility in how you plant out your seedlings, we reckon a typical setup will require about 4 square metres of space. There are many other options though, such as interplanting and growing some plants, such as the parsley, in a pot in your windowsill. And, as your pack will consist of multiples of most plants, it is also very easy to share your pack with a friend or neighbour.
