Our Mission
Why We Exist
Food Works is a dynamic, learning organisation, and we don’t believe that meaningful change always fits neatly into rigid annual plans or long term strategies. Instead, we stay responsive by learning what works, what doesn’t, and what our communities need the most.
This mission guides our decisions and helps us focus our energy where it can have the greatest impact. Our aim is to have a world where food is produced and used fairly and sustainably for everyone.
Our Mission & Aims
- We create value: We get the best out of food by making sure it isn’t wasted and applying passion and skills to how we use it. By creating value we are sustainable, environmentally and as an organisation.
- Building communities around food: Food Works is a commons where communities can contribute what they can so that everyone can get what they need.
- Inspiring change: We inspire change by being that change, showing that a different world is possible.
Our Values
- Respect: We recognise that everyone deserves to be respected for who they are, irrespective of their circumstances and identity. We respect and demonstrate care and compassion for people and our world.
- Sustainability: We build structural solutions which will have a lasting and positive impact on the natural environment, people and society.
- Collaboration: We are only successful, if we are all successful. We build solutions for everyone, and that is best done in collaboration to ensure everyone is included.
- Fairness: We can only be truly sustainable and inclusive if we are fair. Fairness is about recognising value without prejudice.
- Creativity: A different world will require new ideas and solutions. We are innovators that will apply their creativity and entrepreneurial skills to generating and implementing new ideas. We accept that some of those may fail, that is an inevitable and useful part of our journey.
- Openness: We work in a transparent and collaborative way with each other and with our partners. We share our practices and resources and invite anyone to copy, criticise or improve them for the common good.
