When a corporate team recently joined us for a cooking workshop using surplus food, we knew it would be a meaningful day.
The group initially went to our warehouse by mistake, but this turned into a fortunate detour. They were able to see where all the food for our production comes from, which gave them a valuable insight into our processes and a deeper appreciation for the journey of surplus food to meals on plates in our cafes.
Over a shared lunch, Gabi our Head Chef, introduced them to the Food Works story before the group dove into the activities. Each participant selected and prepared a dish from scratch, and the results were truly phenomenal. Two of the participants had never done any cooking at this scale, but they followed Gabi’s guidance with great enthusiasm. By the end of the day, they had produced more than 200 meals. What an incredible outcome for just three people in the kitchen! These meals will be boxed and frozen for purchase as our Just Meals.
Beyond the cooking, the workshop brought the team closer. They had never had the chance to connect before, coming from different departments. During the session, they chatted about their hometowns, favourite foods, films, and holidays – conversations they don’t usually have time for during the workday. It was a real win-win for team wellbeing and cohesion.
It was a brilliant day that combined learning, wellbeing, and community impact all in one. The team created something meaningful for themselves, for Food Works, and for those who will benefit from the meals.
