I first joined Food Works in March 2024, while studying for my MSc in Food and Nutrition Sciences at Sheffield Hallam University. As an international student from Nigeria, I was keen to use my skills in a real, practical way – and volunteering here felt like the perfect place to start.

Most of my time has been spent at our Handsworth warehouse, where I’ve seen first-hand how surplus food can be rescued and turned into something that really makes a difference. It’s always inspiring to see families leaving with good food at fair prices – proof that fighting food waste is about so much more than the environment. It’s about people too.

I’ve also volunteered in our kitchen at the Zest Centre, working alongside the chefs and other volunteers to turn surplus ingredients into tasty meals, like a baked carbonara made entirely from food that might otherwise have gone to waste.

Volunteering has given me the chance to connect my studies with real community impact. It’s been amazing to work with passionate people, like Gabriela, who is the Head Chef at Food Works.

For me, being part of Food Works has been more than just volunteering. It’s been a way to feel part of a community, to share what I know, and to learn so much in return. I’d really encourage others, especially fellow students and migrants, to get involved.

Together, we can turn surplus food into something that brings hope, dignity, and good meals to people across Sheffield.
