Kiril Mischeff is one of the leading UK importers and stockholders of ingredients for the food and beverage manufacturing industry, and a supplier of finished food products to the retail and food service sectors.
Name: Amy Baxter
How long have you been working at Kiril Mischeff and what is your role?
I have been the Sustainability Officer here at Kiril Mischeff since May of this year and am settling in nicely into the world of food after leaving the public sector.
How is working with Food Works beneficial to your organisation?
Working with Food Works is beneficial to Kiril Mischeff in so many ways, and the opportunity to donate surplus stock supports us on our sustainability journey. As part of our wider sustainability strategy, we have a set target to deliver zero waste to landfill by 2030, with charity donations being an integral way of getting us closer to achieving this goal.
Knowing that stock that would otherwise be disposed of is being repurposed into meals that feed the community or included in surplus food boxes at Food Works markets is a really rewarding feeling, and to me is sustainability in action.
Internally, we are huge fans of Food Works and some of our colleagues regularly enjoy lunches at their community cafes whilst working from home, and are hoping to attend an upcoming bistro night very soon!

What would have happened to the butter beans had we not intercepted them?
Kiril Mischeff recently donated 10 pallets of butter beans that were not sent out to our end customer due to damages the packaging received during transport. If not donated to Food Works, the butter beans would have been disposed of despite the damages being mostly aesthetic, of course generating large quantities of waste at great cost. We managed to save these beans from landfill and donated them to Food Works to be included in their cafe and frozen ready meals as a valuable source of protein!

Do you have any tips from your personal life for reducing food waste in the home?
Living alone means it can be tricky for me to get through food before the use by date, so my (potentially controversial) top trick is to freeze your bread! This extends the shelf-life and means I always have some to hand should I need my weekly toast fix!
