It’s been a bumper harvest on the farm this autumn, with all kinds of things being picked and packed to make their way into the patron boxes, cafes and markets and, in turn, your bellies!
We’ve been picking…squashes, salads from the hydroponics, kohl rabi, brassicas, radish, tomatillos, chicory, beans, parsley, basil, chillies, crab apples, and the tomatoes that just keep on coming!
Thanks to the longer season we’re granted by growing under glass (and the bananas that we were given by the warehouse to speed along the ripening process!!), the tomatoes have been abundant. We’re now onto the stage of saving seed from the most successful plants, and imagining all the things we can do with a glut of green tomatoes – recipes and ideas welcome!
Although it feels like the growing season is coming to an end, it’s also another beginning! We’ve been doing plenty of sowing for overwintering crops, like winter salads, garlic and spinach. Alongside this, we’ve been sowing some hardy annual flowers, like sweet peas and cornflowers – planting these in autumn will give you a stronger plant come spring-time, and the colour and scent of these particular blooms are brilliant for encouraging pollinators into the glasshouse!
Want to get involved?
You can still join us at the farm over autumn and winter as we’ve got plenty of jobs to keep yourselves warm whilst volunteering here. We are now offering volunteer sessions on Monday mornings, as well as Tuesday, Thursdays and alternate Sundays. Sign up here.
We’ve also got an Apple Juicing Workshop coming up on the 2nd November from 15:00 – 17:00. It’s been a fantastic year for apples, and one of our amazing volunteers Hilary has kindly offered up her apple press for us to play with! Bring your own bottle and let’s juice the apple glut!
Check here for tickets and more information.
Also, keep your eyes peeled for more workshops coming soon!
