My wife and I moved to Sheffield some 18 months ago having previously lived in south west London for 40 years. Yes, it was a big move, but to sweeten the pill we are both originally from the north west (Cheshire and north Wales) and have family in Sheffield. Our vowel sounds are hard.
I volunteered for a similar but much smaller project in Kingston – the Chessington Community Fridge – so I was really happy when a Google search presented me with Food Works.
I started volunteering at the Food Works Longley Cafe. At the moment, I generally work two sessions a week – a cafe session at Upperthorpe and a driving session from the warehouse. Both, in their different ways, have been great for me.
With driving I have learnt the geography of Sheffield through the medium of supermarkets – glamorous parts of the city such as Crystal Peaks, Wales (eh!) and Halfway have come to life.
The cafe sessions are immense fun whilst helping to provide an invaluable community service. I am still amazed at the quality of the meals produced in the kitchens. The work can be tiring but is hugely rewarding.
Thank you Food Works!
