Sustainability has always been at the heart of Food Works as we strive to make a positive impact on the environment. Every year we save approximately 400 tonnes of food from going to waste,

the packaging we use for our Just Meals and takeaway cups in our cafes is 100% compostable, and two out of three of our vans are fully electric.

Powering our warehouse with solar energy

We’re now proud to add to our efforts with the installation of a solar panel system at our Handsworth warehouse. In February local company True Line Electrical Services installed a series of 36 panels on our roof which we hope will generate approximately 9330kwh of electricity per year. This represents a potential saving of 1932 kg of CO2 each year (though we’re off to a very cloudy start so far!)

Our warehouse is our main food storage hub and contains our walk-in fridge and freezer which operate 24/7 365 days of the year. It is also the charging point for our electric vans and with energy bills ever increasing the installation of this system will hopefully make a positive difference to our overheads and help ensure Food Works remains sustainable over the long term.

Partnership and support

The installation of the panels was part-funded by a grant from the UK SPF Low Carbon project whose staff have been incredibly supportive throughout the process, with additional contribution from our landlord.
