It’s been a year of hard work, learning curves, community spirit, and growth – in more ways than one! Thanks to University of Sheffield Broadcast Journalism student, Trudie Wright, we’ve got this fantastic video that highlights our challenges and successes during that time.

From bare beds to blossoming growth

When Food Works took over the glasshouses, the space was largely dormant. Over the past year, volunteers, partners and community members have worked together to clear, plant, and harvest –  turning a neglected site into a place of productivity and purpose.

The produce grown here now feeds into our community cafes, markets and weekly patron boxes, making fresh, nature-friendly food more accessible to local people. They also support schools by sharing seedlings and growing knowledge, helping city-wide food education take root – literally!

Shout-out to our medical students

A special mention goes to the group of medical students who joined us this year and feature in the video – Martha, Ali, Alicia, Lucy and Katie. From hands-on work in the glasshouses to helping document the impact of community food growing, these future healthcare professionals brought fresh perspectives and made meaningful contributions to the project. In case you missed it, here are their videos and write up from their time with us!

Big thank you to Trudie Wright

Huge thanks again to Trudie, whose skills in broadcast journalism have helped us tell our Norton Nurseries story. Filming a project like this isn’t always simple: weather changes and plants grow at their own pace, so we very much appreciate the time taken to put this together.

Looking ahead

The first year at Norton Nurseries has taught us that transformation doesn’t happen overnight, but it does happen when people come together with a shared purpose. As we look ahead to the next season, we’re excited to keep growing food, learning new skills, forming new partnerships and keeping that community spirit going.

Watch the video above and see for yourself what a remarkable year it’s been!
