As the new year approaches, our pea shoots are nearly ready to cut!
We saved seed from our variety ‘Serpette de Guilloteau’, which we grew for pea pods last year. Although the plants themselves grew tremendously big, the peas only stayed tasty for a few days before becoming too starchy to eat. We think this variety had a very short ripe window, likely due to how hot the nurseries became late last spring.
This year, we’re trying a different pea variety, so we’ve decided to use all of our saved seed to grow pea shoots instead. Pea shoots make a delicious garnish for almost any dish, and we can’t wait for you to try them!
Growing peas at home? Here’s a Tip:
Smooth-seeded peas are much hardier and can be planted now.
Wrinkled-seeded peas should be sown later (around March time).
Peas are a great crop to get off the ground early. We recommend sowing them in modules or trays to protect young plants from being eaten during their early stages before planting them out.
Happy growing!

If you’d like to try our peas at home, or other veg we are growing on the farm, then you can sign up to a weekly patron box.
Our peas will be making their way into the boxes very soon – once they’ve defrosted!
