Food is rising up everyone’s agenda. Now there’s a new way to get the inside track and come together to make change in Sheffield. Sign up now, or read on.

We’re all feeling the pinch at the till, and living through the kinds of shortages that didn’t exist ten years ago. More of us are trying to find ways to help make food fair and sustainable for everyone. We’re eating less meat, and donating to food banks. These are all positive and important steps, but not enough to meet the challenges we are facing*. If we only change as individuals, we miss out on all the change we can collectively make that can accelerate a shift to fairer, more sustainable food.

What could we change if we came together, not as consumers, but as citizens?

We already know that repurposing food waste can cut up to 10% of greenhouse gas emissions, and that the UK’s urban green spaces can help provide up to 40% of the UK’s fresh fruit and veg needs. This feels hopeful – and tells us that we can start to tackle these challenges, collaboratively across the whole food system.

We can start to tackle this together, from farm to fork.

You may have spotted a Food Works farm, cafe or pop up market somewhere in the city – or you may already be one of our community of  400-plus volunteers that gather locally grown and surplus food to provide people with healthy, affordable meals through pay-as-you-can cafes and environmentally-friendly ready meals.

Together, the Food Works community saves 500 tonnes of food from being wasted every year across the city, and turns this into more than 40,000 delicious, healthy meals. That’s already a huge, collective step forwards for fairer, more sustainable food for Sheffield.

Now, Food Works is inviting the people of Sheffield to grow this community and help build a movement for fairer, more sustainable food for the city.

We want Sheffield to be a city where neighbours to grow food together, where families and friends use social eating spaces and where workmates help distribute resources more fairly across the city. We’ve got exciting times ahead of us – we’ll be growing a lot more food as well as repurposing surplus – and we’d like you to join us on the inside of this incredibly exciting journey.

We’re just getting started – so we’re asking everyone for now to join the Food Works community online. You’ll get a regular email with the inside track on what we’re up to, and you’ll be the first to find out how to get involved.

*Globally, one third of all food produced is still wasted, and the food system is responsible for half of global greenhouse gas emissions. In turn, nearly 1 in every 5 children are experiencing food poverty
