Ryan, Food Works chef and hub manager, had the pleasure of attending an event organised by Roots Allotments. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by Will, the Sheffield patch manager, who extended an invitation to explore the allotment cultivated by him and other devoted individuals.

The site featured a vibrant field of flowers, vegetable patches, welly wanging, an oversized Jenga set, bowling, homemade food contributed by community members, and a variety of other refreshments, all centered around a large tepee.

It was here that we meet Ed, the founder of Roots. Ed explained that they were holding a raffle with all proceeds going to Food Works, a vegetable contest and several talks from local social organisations.

I delivered a speech outlining the story of Food Works, our operational framework, and acknowledging the significant efforts of our volunteers and staff. Then went on to listen to talks from Discovery Outdoors Sheffield and Moss Valley Market Garden.

Overall a great day to showcase what Food Works has accomplished over the last decade. As well as making new connections, we were spreading awareness around food waste and growing local produce, all whilst raising over £250 from the raffle.

Thanks for having us Roots Allotments!

– Ryan, Chef & Hub Manager

Got an allotment or grow your own food at home?

You can make a real difference by growing a little extra for your community. Through our Grow a Row initiative, we invite gardeners and allotment holders to donate fresh, surplus produce to help stock our hubs and support local food access.

Whether you’re growing a single row of veg or have a glut of tomatoes you can’t get through, we’d love to hear from you: info@thefoodworks.org

You can also bring donations directly to one of our hubs.
