Last month, our workshop attendees gathered at the nurseries to dive into the world of nature-friendly food growing.

At Food Works, we grow without pesticides, herbicides, or harsh chemicals. Our goal is to ensure the food we produce is nourishing. Not just for the people who eat it, but also to the land and the many other creatures that live around us – or visit us! Chemical free growing protects our local bee population and improves the soil health for future seasons.

The power of plant partnerships

We kicked things off by exploring the companion planting. We discussed why these plant pairings are vital for natural pest control and how we integrate them into our professional crop plans. Everyone sowed their own companion plants to take away and watch flourish in their own gardens!

Brewing natural “tea” for the soil

Next, we headed out for a forage around the nurseries to gather ingredients for a natural fertiliser ‘tea’. The are plenty of wild goodies that are packed with nutrients for the soil and plants. After collecting our ingredients, we made large ‘teabags’ for participants to take home, steep, and eventually use as a potent, chemical-free fertiliser for their own plants.

Join our growing community

It was wonderful to meet so many people passionate about sustainable food growing and to swap tips and techniques. If you’d like to master nature-friendly gardening, learn more about companion planting, or just get your hands in the soil, we’d love for you to get involved!
