We had a lovely afternoon in our ‘Ornamental and Edible’ workshop. We took a tour around the nursery, where participants discovered the incredible potential of edible flowers hidden within common vegetable crops – including brassicas, broad beans, peas, salads, and herbs!

Harvesting the blooms

To put our learning into practice, everyone potted up a mixed tray of edible flower crops. These went home with our attendees to grow, bloom, and eventually harvest for their own kitchen tables! It’s a wonderful way to make a garden look stunning while keeping it productive.

The art of natural bundle dyeing

We also explored the dual purpose of certain flowers. Many of the blooms we grow in the nursery are not only edible but have been used traditionally for natural dyeing.

Using dried marigold petals from last year’s crop, we experimented with ‘bundle dyeing.’ We sprinkled the vibrant petals onto fabric and rolled them into tight spirals. Participants took these bundles home to gently steam, revealing unique, nature-printed patterns on the cloth!
