Last November we held a winter warmer arts and crafts social, inviting volunteers from each of our hubs to either BYO craft, or learn and share in someone else’s. It was a very cosy evening filled with lovely company and lots of laughter. We had a few different stations of craft set up: a sewing corner, a crochet table, and a jewellery station.

Jim, one of our longest-standing volunteers (who has been volunteering with us since 2018!), kindly set up a jewellery upcycling demonstration. During lockdown, Jim was inspired to give new life to old materials, and taught himself how to create entirely new designs from beads and jewels that otherwise would have gone in the bin.
It’s no surprise that our volunteers who are passionate about reducing food waste, are also keen to re-purpose, re-distribute and reduce surplus in other creative ways. Jo made a gorgeous solar system bracelet.
“I was introduced to Bead Crafting whilst on holiday when I was offered the chance to attend a free bead crafting class, and I was hooked. When I returned home I did a little research and I found that I could recycle older unwanted cosmetic jewellery and turn them into modern bespoke jewellery styles. No more trawling around cosmetic jewellery shops trying to find suitable jewellery, (both in design and price) when you can make your own, and the costs are virtually non-existent, just your time and some unwanted jewellery needed” – Jim.
If you missed out, don’t worry. We will be hosting other crafty socials in the future!
