Time is really flying this year, it’s already time to start harvesting our cucumbers! It really seems like only last month that we were sowing these, but they’ve been absolutely loving the heat of the glasshouses (which has been reaching 48 degrees centigrade)!
We’re growing a few varieties this year – some of those we distributed as seedlings to local schools, grow kits and community projects. The rest we’re growing on in the nursery to harvest for patron boxes and our wonderful cafe’s.
Meet Our Cucumber Varieties
The first variety to appear has been the ‘Picolino’ – it’s a high yielding, smaller variety – the plants are looking abundant, so we’re expecting loads more to come!
We’re also growing the classic ‘Marketmore’ – this is the more classic variety that you may recognise from the supermarkets – producing long, dark green fruits that are really well suited to growing in the UK.
We’ve also got an exciting variety called the ‘Armenian Cucumber’! It’s actually not technically a cucumber, as the name suggests, but a ‘muskmelon’ that produces long, lightly coloured fruits that look and taste like cucumbers! They’re typically grown in the middle-East, and because of this are incredibly heat tolerant – something that we as growers may need to begin growing more of with these hot hot summers! These take a little longer to produce fruit, but keep your eyes peeled for more pictures of those, and fruits going into your patron boxes!
A Huge Thank You to Our Volunteers
Many thanks as always to our wonderful volunteers who’ve been braving the heat in the glasshouses to water, weed, and care for our plants – we couldn’t do it without you!
